What is CEREC, and why is it a game-changer for our patients?

CEREC is time-tested milling system that allows Dr. Stanton and his team to fabricate dental restorations such as crowns and veneers in the same day.

In the past, a crown would take two visits -we’d need to spend the first visit preparing the crown, making a temporary crown, and taking an impression, and then we’d have you back for a second visit to cement the crown.

CAD/CAM: An Introduction to CEREC® Technology

CEREC is an incredible technology for you as the patient, and for Dr. Stanton as the dentist. Have you ever had conventional dental impressions taken? You likely won’t forget the experience. The process can be uncomfortable and lengthy. Because CEREC is an entirely digital system, we no longer need to use messy impression material to “take a measurement” of the crown, and temporary crowns are thing of the past as we finish the restoration in the same day.

In fact, because CAD/CAM is digital in nature, it is much more accurate than traditional dental impressions, which can warp and distort. And being a digital impression, Dr. Stanton can control every aspect of the design and milling process, and we can remove any potential dental laboratory errors or delays from the equation.

What can be done with CEREC?

A large part of CEREC’s value is in its versatility. While crowns are the workhorse of CEREC, Dr. Stanton uses it to create veneers and other restorations such as onlays (a type of restoration where there’s not enough tooth for a regular filling, but where a crown isn’t necessary yet). You can learn more about same-day crowns and same-day veneers, and you can visit or galleries to see pictures of our actual patients with their crowns and veneers.

How Does CEREC Work?

CEREC is one of the leading CAD/CAM systems available in dentistry today. The acronym stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics”. Essentially, this technology eliminates the need for an outside dental lab, making in-office fabrication possible the very same day. To take impressions, Dr. Stanton will use a small handheld wand. As he passes the device over the teeth, a camera captures thousands of images, stitches them together, and sends them to our computer software program. There, Dr. Stanton can virtually design your crowns and veneers, crafting them to fit your unique dental anatomy and esthetics. Once complete, the image files will be sent to our in-office milling machine, where your restorations will be carved from solid blocks of porcelain.
